Mattawan Band Students and Families:
Josh Garcia devoted 11 years of his life to the Mattawan Bands as an assistant to the program, from 2005 until 2016. Josh loved the Mattawan Band Program with all his heart. As a person of many talents and gifts, Josh arranged marching band shows and music scores, organized the music library, mentored drum majors, and shared his low brass talents with students. As a mentor, Josh was patient, a listener, a nurturer, and a trusted teacher. His legacy to the program is evident today, from the playing of his arrangement of Dancer in the Dark to students striving to be strong leaders, to caring for and respecting peers. Starting with the sixth-grade beginning band students, Josh planted the seed that being in the Mattawan Band is cool and being a dedicated member would result in achieving lifelong music and leadership skills, friends, and treasured memories.
Josh passed away unexpectedly on September 13, 2022.
The Josh Garcia Memorial Scholarship is being offered to financially assist individuals in their pursuit of a summer music camp or private lessons. The scholarship will be awarded to those applicants who demonstrate leadership skills, a strong dedication to the band program, and respect for peers.
