2019 MSBOA District XI Band Festival
Friday, March 8 – Saturday, March 9 @ Mattawan High School, 56487 Western St, Mattawan, MI 49071
Over the course of these 2 days, the Mattawan Band Program and the Mattawan Band Boosters will host 21 area middle school and high school bands for the MSBOA District XI Band & Orchestra Festival. Each band will play 3 prepared pieces for a panel of judges in the auditorium. Following this performance, they will be moved into the High School Band Room to sight read one piece before a judge. Each band will then be given a District Rating shortly following their performances. Families are encouraged to attend these events. *All Mattawan Band Students are required to attend and wear their normal concert attire.
The Mattawan Band Boosters will run a concession stand in the cafeteria during the entirety of this event. Not only are we looking for volunteers to staff the concession stand, we are looking for donations of individually wrapped baked goods to sell at the concession stand.
We will also be providing the following meals for the judges, directors, interns and staff while they are on our campus: Friday Dinner, Saturday Breakfast and Saturday Lunch.
Below, you will find the sign-ups for both concession duties and judges meals. We cannot make these two days work without your help!

Parents, please join us in the HS Band room immediately following our stage performance. Every ensemble that participates in MSBOA Festival is required to sight-read. After our stage performance, we will transition to the HS Band room. Parents make sure you follow us there! As an ensemble, without playing any instruments, we will have 5 minutes to review and prepare an entire piece of music. Students will use a range of techniques to prepare parts, from singing and fingering their music to clapping and counting. After the allotted time, we will perform our piece and receive comments and a rating for our performance from a judge. What is the rating system?
Our bands are evaluated in the areas of tone, technique, rhythm, intonation, and music interpretation. They receive a letter grade for each of these categories. Those grades are then totalled and become a roman numeral score of a I, II, III, IV, or V. Those are then averaged with the sight-reading score for an overall roman numeral score of I, II, III, IV, or V.
